Mercedes-AMG’s 5.5 litre twin-turbo V8 is a newborn by most powertrain standards, having entered service in 2011, but its tour will soon come to an end.
The engine, known as the M157, first appeared as a replacement-of-sorts for AMG’s M156 6.2 litre naturally-aspirated V8, powering models from the CLS 63 through to the brutish G 63.
But, in the time since, AMG has revealed a new 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, already powering the new AMG GT Coupe and the latest C 63 sedan and wagon.
AMG says the smaller new V8 is capable of producing even more power than the 5.5 V8 - although, for now, its highest production output is listed at 375kW.
